I am a coffee lover! It wakes me up, gets me through the day, and without it I believe no one would want or could stand to be around me. (I get a little grouchy without my morning pick-me-up.) Therefore after working at our local coffee house for 6 months I learned a few tricks which I brought home with me.
Did you know that you can cold brew coffee? That is how the coffee shop I worked in created their delicious iced coffees, the ones that didn't make your ice melt before you finished drinking them. they stayed cold while you enjoyed the entire drink. That is also how they managed to get a really good coffee flavor into their cold drinks. Believe me there is a difference.
I believe everyone has the right to a great cup of joe so to help you enjoy life a little more for a little less I am going to share my secret.
Iced Coffee Cold Brewed
What you will need:
A large Mason jar with a lid (though we have recently started making coffee in bigger batches using a one-gallon pitcher and more coffee)
One coffee filter
One rubber band
A good brand of coffee (I prefer Folgers or Maxwells because they are inexpensive, freshly ground coffee is also good.)
Water (I used purified water)
Fill your coffee filter with 4 tablespoons of ground coffee. Pinch the top of the filter together until it is tightly closed but be careful not to rip your filter. Wrap the rubber band around the top, making sure the filter is entirely closed. Put closed filter into your mason jar, fill the jar with water, close with lid and refrigerate overnight. As your coffee refrigerates it is also brewing.
You now have cold-brewed coffee.
There are a number of delicious ways to use your cold-brewed coffee. To make a simple non-flavored coffee just pour your coffee into a cup and add ice. If you prefer flavor you can use 4 shots (I use a measuring shot glass to measure my coffee) of coffee and one shot of vanilla creamer, add ice, fill the rest of your glass with milk, stir and enjoy.
You can also pick up flavored drink syrup in the coffee isle. Whatever flavor you choose, for an 8 oz glass I use one shot of flavor to every 4 shots of coffee and fill the rest of the glass with ice and milk.
If you prefer breves which are creamier than lattes simply replace the milk with half and half. (They are so delicious!)
And finally if you would rather have an Americano simply replace the milk with water. (This option has the least amount of calories, well besides just straight iced coffee with no flavor.
I hope you enjoy cold-brewing your own iced coffee and I hope it saves you money!
From my home to yours, Enjoy.
